Introvert jobs: every occupation scored for social demands

Most lists of jobs for introverts are one writer's opinion. This one is built from what workers say about their own jobs. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, asks workers in 760 occupations how much contact their job involves, how often they talk face to face, by phone or to groups, how important teamwork and customers are, and how often noise bothers them. We matched each occupation to its median pay, projected growth and typical entry education from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What each rating measures

O*NET ratings are averages of worker answers on a 1 to 5 scale. Some questions ask how much (contact), some how often (face-to-face, phone, public speaking, conflict, noise) and some how important (teamwork, customers). They are shown on their own scales. The social index rescales the first seven to 0 to 100 and averages them. Noise is shown separately and is not part of the index.

What this can't tell you

  • The ratings describe what a job asks of workers. They do not measure personality, and they are not medical or psychological advice.
  • O*NET does not measure remote work, so the table can't show which jobs can be done from home.
  • Pay, growth and openings are national figures. Local pay varies a lot.
  • We ranked 743 of the 760 occupations in the data. The other 17 are left out: 13 because O*NET flags their ratings as unreliable or publishes no respondent count, and 4 because the BLS publishes no annual median wage for them.
  • A quiet job can still be a poor fit for other reasons, such as hours, location or stress.

Common questions

How is the social index calculated?

O*NET publishes worker ratings from 1 to 5 on seven social questions: contact with others, face-to-face discussions, phone conversations, public speaking, dealing with customers or the public, teamwork and conflict. We rescaled each to 0 to 100 and averaged them. The seven use different scales (amount, frequency and importance), so the index is a rough summary; the table shows contact and teamwork separately.

Do the scores measure introversion?

No. They describe what a job asks of workers, not personality. They are not medical or psychological advice.

Which jobs are left out?

We ranked 743 of the 760 occupations in the data. The other 17 are left out: 13 because O*NET flags their ratings as unreliable or publishes no respondent count, and 4 because the BLS publishes no annual median wage for them.

Where does the data come from?

Work ratings come from the O*NET 31.0 Database. Pay is from BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025. Growth, projected openings and entry education come from BLS Employment Projections 2025-35.
