Is IT a good career for introverts?

It depends on the role. Of the 10 IT roles we compared, database architects report the least contact with others and computer systems analysts the most.

IT is often recommended to introverts as if it were one job. In the ratings it isn't: help desk and support roles report face-to-face discussions far more often than software developers, who rate among the lowest of any occupation.

Teamwork is the measure to watch. Every role here rates working in a team as very important or more, even where dealing with the public matters little.

We compared ten IT occupations, from the help desk to software, databases, networks and security. They are separate occupations in the federal data, each with its own worker ratings, pay and outlook. The ratings come from O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, where workers answer questions about what their job involves.

What the data shows

  • Contact with others ranges from 3.6 out of 5 for database architects to 4.4 for computer systems analysts. Both are closest to "contact most of the time".
  • After contact, the biggest difference is in face-to-face discussions: 3.0 out of 5 for software developers, against 4.8 for computer user support specialists.
  • The next biggest is distracting or uncomfortable noise: 1.1 out of 5 for software developers, against 2.8 for web developers.
  • 1 of the 10 occupations with their own pay data involve more contact with others than the typical US occupation.
  • 4% of software developers say they have face-to-face discussions every day, compared with 89% of computer user support specialists.
  • All 10 rate working in a team as very important or more.
  • Among occupations with their own pay data, the lowest-contact one is also the best paid: database architects, at a median $139,500 a year.

What the numbers can't tell you

  • O*NET ratings are averages of worker answers on a 1 to 5 scale. Some questions ask how much (contact), some how often (face-to-face, phone, public speaking, conflict, noise) and some how important (teamwork, customers). They are shown on their own scales.
  • The ratings describe the job, averaged across workers and workplaces. A particular employer, team or shift can be very different.
  • They don't measure personality, and they are not career, medical or psychological advice.
  • Pay and openings are national figures from the BLS. Local pay varies.

Common questions

Which IT job involves the least contact with others?

Of the 10 roles compared here, database architects report the least, at 3.6 out of 5 on O*NET's contact rating, closest to "contact most of the time".
